Over 4,600 Northeast Ohio Students Expected to Submit Perfect Report Cards for 2008-09 Academic Year
Earning a perfect report card requires focus and commitment to learning-and for those who achieve that goal, there are rewards. Just ask the students who are Cavaliers Straight "A" All Stars. Since the program began in the 2005-06 season, Cavaliers Straight A All Stars presented by Westfield Insurance has proven to be one of the team?s most successful educational outreach programs.
Each grading period, elementary and middle school students who submit their straight "A" report cards are randomly selected to receive two tickets to a Cavaliers home game and the opportunity to be recognized during the game. Three hundred students from across northeast Ohio are selected each academic year from a pool of thousands of straight A report cards. In addition, the Cavaliers and Westfield Insurance present the school with the most straight "A" students each semester with a grant check for $1,000.
"To send the message that hard work and commitment in achieving your goals will have positive rewards is the premise of the ?Straight "A" All-Stars program,?" said Cavaliers president Len Komoroski. "To be able to recognize the achievements of these students is our way of saying ?good job and keep up the good work.? With the support of our partner Westfield Insurance, the program continues to grow within our northeast Ohio schools."
In its first year during the 2005-06 season, "Straight A All Stars" generated more than 1,200 report cards. The program has grown steadily in subsequent years with over 2,500 report cards submitted in 2006-07, over 2,800 received in 2007-08, and is on pace to receive over 4,600 report cards for the 2008-09 academic year.
"Westfield Insurance has been very impressed with the number of straight "A" report cards submitted by area students to the Cleveland Cavaliers," said Jim Clay, president of Westfield Insurance. "We believe that supporting our youth is one of the best ways Westfield can invest in the future and we?re proud to sponsor the ?Straight "A" All-Stars? program."
In addition to receiving two tickets, an official Straight "A" All-Stars T-shirt and being honored during the game, each student, along with all students who submitted their report cards receive an award certificate and a special Cavaliers book cover.
The program is open to students in Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Portage and Summit counties. For the first-grading period of the 2008-09 academic year, the Cavaliers and Westfield Insurance recognized 150 straight "A" All-Star students during the Cavaliers vs. Chicago Bulls game on Friday, January 2nd.
To enter, students can visit cavs.com for the registration form and to view the official rules. The registration form along with a current grading period report card can be faxed to 216-420-2101 or mail to Straight "A" All-Stars, One Center Court, Cleveland, Ohio 44115.
